👩‍🍳 Why I Love This Recipe

One of my favorite smoothie hacks is to use frozen fruit. I’ve always found that flash freezing my fruit ahead of making smoothies makes for a smoother consistency because you don’t need to use ice because the fruit is already frozen.

So when I had a bunch of overripe peaches and bananas, I knew it was time to freeze for a late-summer smoothie. I added a nutrition boost with protein powder and chia seeds, and a pitted date for a touch more sweetness. And it was perfect, I hope you give it a try!

🍑 Ingredients

  • Frozen peaches: frozen peaches are key for a smoother texture without having to use ice (here’s how to freeze fresh peaches)
  • Frozen bananas: the base of this creamy smoothie, I freeze bananas into slices so they’re easy to throw into smoothies
  • Plant-based milk: any type will do, I used a full fat oat but soy milk usually has higher protein content
  • Vanilla extract: adds a touch of flavor
  • Protein powder (optional): while optional, I like to add plant-based protein powder to my smoothies for a protein boost (here’s my favorite brand of protein powder)
  • Chia seeds (optional): adds a boost of nutrition and a nice, thick texture to the smoothie
  • Medjool date (optional): add for a sweeter taste, but omit and the smoothie is still great on its own
  • Recommended tools: high speed blender

👉 Optional add-ins: smoothies are great because you can add anything you’d like to them once you know the foundational recipe. To bulk up the nutrition of this smoothie, you can add fresh or frozen spinach, blended rolled oats, ground flaxseeds, and/or a tablespoon of nut or seed butter. Get creative!

💡 Ideas for meal prep

  • Freeze fruit ahead of time. Freeze fruit at the beginning of the week so you can easily grab it when you’re ready to make the smoothie.
  • Make frozen smoothie ingredient packs. Package up single-serving ingredients for smoothies in a small baggie or container and then store in the freezer and pull out when ready to blend (don’t store liquid ingredients like milk or vanilla, just add them in when you’re ready to make it).
  • Don’t make the smoothie and then freeze. The texture won’t hold up well if you blend the entire smoothie and then try to freeze it, the texture will not be smooth after freezing.

Notes

How to meal prep: I do not recommend blending this smoothie ahead of time as the texture will not hold up, even when frozen. However, you can create small individual smoothie ingredient packs with the frozen peaches, frozen banana, chia seeds, and date to throw into the blender when you’re ready to make (do not add liquid ingredients like milk and vanilla).
